Pharmacy students survey drug drop boxes
A team with the ETSU College of Pharmacy spent the day at the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office sorting through all the medications collected at their drop box.
All the pills have been dropped off at the sheriff's office's drop box over the past few months.
The team with the College of Pharmacy began sorting through the drop box a couple of years ago to see how many commonly abused medications it was helping to take off the streets. "This is just one function because of the issues regarding prescription drug abuse. It's both complexity and quantity -- this is just one mechanism to help individuals in our community. More mechanisms will be needed," says Dr. Jeff Gray with ETSU's College of Pharmacy.
This same time last year, the team found close to 1,000 oxycodone pills in the drop box and almost 900 hydrocodone pills.
All of the medication is safely incinerated after collection.
