The iconic Paramount marquee has been off for repairs -- but that's about to change.
The 'Watt's Up' campaign to renovate the sign has been a success. All 1,960 bulbs have been purchased by people here in the region and as far away as California.
At $20 a piece the Paramount Center for the Arts has raised nearly $40,000 for the project. The sign, which was first installed in 1931, was in desperate need of an upgrade.
Diane Dempsey is the executive director of the Paramount. "We had some mechanical problems with it. All of that had to be repaired and new bulbs, and that's where the Watt's Up campaign came from," she said.
The old light bulbs were 25 watts each. The new LEDs are just one watt per bulb, and that will add up to huge savings over the long run.
The relighting celebration starts Thursday night at 8 p.m. with live music and light refreshments.
At 9 p.m., they will flip the switch and light up State Street again.
