BRISTOL, Tenn. -

Many people may be sporting purple Tuesday in honor of domestic violence awareness month.

Abuse Alternatives in Bristol, Tennessee is sponsoring the first Paint it Purple Day.

The goal is to get people to wear purple during the day to recognize the month of October as a time to raise awareness of domestic violence. "We just want people to know that there are resources out there available for them, that they're not alone and that they can reach out for help," says Kathy Johnson, the executive director of Abuse Alternatives.

Paint it Purple is a new campaign this year. Organizers are hoping to continue the tradition every year.
