Marsh Regional Blood Center is experiencing a critical need for donors with the O-negative blood type as the Labor Day holiday weekend approaches.
Don Campbell, Marsh Regional's director, said a recent surge in usage of O-negative blood by some medical facilities in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia has created an urgent need for an increased supply of this blood type.
O-negative blood is extremely important for medical facilities because that type can be used in any person's body.
Because of the Labor Day holiday, Marsh Regional's donor centers will not be open on Monday, but many residents in the region will be participating in activities to celebrate this special weekend. Some of these activities carry with them the potential for injuries that might require a significant amount of blood to treat.
"So we are asking anyone in the area who has O-negative blood and is able to donate to please consider sharing the gift of life," Campbell said. "This region has always risen to the occasion when we have had a need before, and a visit to one of our donor centers or a blood drive this week will have a profound impact on our ability to ensure an adequate blood supply to treat our friends and neighbors in this region."
One excellent opportunity to help will be on Thursday, Aug. 29, and Friday, Aug. 30, at a drive in memory of the late Dr. Daniel Klinar. The event will be held at the emergency department annex of Holston Valley Medical Center and the Julia Davis Collection Center, 102 E. Ravine Road. The hours are noon-7:30 p.m. at Holston Valley and 10:30 a.m.-6 p.m. at the collection center on Thursday and 7:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the hospital and 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. at the center on Friday.
Donors are also welcome to visit the donor center in Bristol, 1996 W. State St.
