2005: Millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett becomes the first person to fly an airplane non-stop around the world solo without refueling. He had taken off from Salina, Kan., in the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer on Feb. 28, 2005, and flew eastbound with the prevailing winds, returning to Salina after a trip of 67 hours, one minute, 10 seconds. The following year, Fossett flew the GlobalFlyer for the longest aircraft flight distance in history, traveling 25,766 miles after flying eastbound from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida around the world once and then continuing across the Atlantic Ocean a second time to arrive in Kent, England.
