2015: College basketball coaching legend Dean Smith dies at the age of 83 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Smith, who won two NCAA Championships and made 11 Final Fours during his 36-year tenure at the University of North Carolina, had suffered from advanced dementia in his latter years. A member of both the Basketball Hall of Fame and the College Basketball Hall of Fame, he also coached Team USA to a gold medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics.
