A new proposal making its way through Virginia's general assembly could limit the value of gifts lawmakers get from lobbyists.

The senate voted 39 to 1 to approve an ethics bill after a lengthy debate where some lawmakers say it's either an unnecessary bill or an inadequate one.

The bill would limit "tangible" gifts from lobbyists to 250 dollars per item, but would not prevent lawmakers from accepting expensive trips and meals from special interests.

The house is set to take up a similar bill.
