Firefighters in Southwest Virginia will soon have a new training facility in Smyth County.
Chilhowie Assistant Fire Chief Josh Davidson tells us the department received money for the structure firefighting simulator through a grant with the Virginia Department of Fire Programs.
He says the simulator has two stories with an attic space.
Davidson says it'll be used for fire training and victim rescue training for the entire region, which will keep firefighters closer to home. "We'll be able to train folks more often and also more intensely here with our own equipment instead of using different buildings in different areas," he said.
Davidson tells us the facility has already passed state inspection. It should be open in May.
