Mother speaks after son dies in crash
The Surgoinsville community is mourning the loss of two teenagers killed in a crash Friday night.
Renee Nauert is still coming to terms with the death of her 18-year-old son William "Billy" Nauert. "I have my moments. It still doesn't feel completely real," said Renee Nauert. "He's a good Christian boy; he's very active in ROTC, [and] does a lot things in the community."
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, William Nauert and 18-year-old Lacota "Cody" Allison were both killed after the truck they were riding in hit a pole on U.S Highway 11-E in Hawkins County around 11:30 Friday night.
Nauert tells News 5 the accident happened less than a mile from their Surgoinsville home. "We were just here at the house hanging out, Jake and Cody came by they played a little pool. They were here 30 or 45 minutes, until they left and said they were going to take Cody home. And then we heard the sirens," said Nauert.
Family friend Caleb Pabon tells us he feared the worst he saw the accident. "I ran down to the truck and saw the girl lying [on the side of the road]. She wasn't moving, and then I saw my girlfriend's brother in the passenger seat and he wasn't moving," said Caleb Pabon.
Sunday afternoon, Billy Nauert's siblings returned to the scene where their brother's life ended too soon. "He had a very big heart, a very good heart. He'd do anything for anybody," said Renee Nauert.
We checked with the Tennessee Highway Patrol. They said the cause of the accident is still under investigation.
They also tell us the driver of the truck was injured in the accident, but they've yet to release his name. We're told charges are pending.
