Miners, coal officials talk health and safety
While the health of the coal industry continues to struggle, miners and coal company officials met Thursday morning to talk about health of coal employees.
At the miner's health and safety symposium held at UVA Wise, experts in the coal and medical industry offered insight into how to create the safest working environment in the mines.
Lou Barletta, Vice President of Safety for Consol Energy told us, since the disasters at the Sago and Upper Big Branch mines, Consol has spent over one billion dollars on safety and made it a priority among employees.
So we've trained them, we've educated them, [we've] put more equipment, and I can tell you our compliance has improved in the past three years," explained Barletta.
Barletta went on to tell us, they are also trying to address growing concerns about black lung disease by looking into new technology.
