JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -

Family members, friends and soldiers gathered to honor Marine who lost his life in Iraq ten years ago.

Sergeant Mike Speer was living with his wife in Kingsport and died after being hit by sniper fire outside Fallujah, Iraq during his second deployment in 2004.

His fellow Marines say they get together to remember him every year, but this year Speer’s family traveled from Kansas to be a part of Saturday’s memorial at the Veteran’s Administration Cemetery in Johnson City.

“If anybody was down and out about anything he would find a way to make them smile, that was his outlook on life, was to make everybody happy,” said Pam Speer, Speer’s mother.

A dinner ceremony was held in Speer’s memory at the Colony Overlook in Colonial Heights to help raise money to purchase a brick for Speer at the Marine Corp Museum outside of Washington D.C.
