BRISTOL, Va. -

The letters have been mailed and the American Red Cross is hoping their "Holiday Mail for Heroes" campaign helps put a smile on a soldier's face this holiday season.

Director of Disaster Relief Patty Tauscher tells us this year just in the Bristol, Virginia Office they received more than 27,000 cards for the troops -- that's about 10,000 more than 2012, when they had around 15,000 cards.

The cards were mailed out Friday so they would reach the troops in time for Christmas. They were sent to the national headquarters, and then they will be distributed worldwide.

Tauscher tells us they also sent a separate box of letters to a troop deployed from Marion.
