Girls on the Run, a local nonprofit program here in Northeast Tennessee, teaches young girls to give back to their community.
Wednesday, the group from Emmett Elementary School in Sullivan County donated items to the SBK Animal Shelter.
Over the course of the semester, the girls collected an assortment of items for the animals at the shelter.
During after school meetings, the coaches help the girls learn how to be healthy mentally, emotionally and physically. Additionally, they plan important service projects like this one.
"I think it helps girls to become empowered and to be healthy,” says Eden Buchanan, one of the girls coaches. “And one of the things that was important about this project is it shows girls that it's important to give back to their community."
The girls also have the opportunity to participate in a non-competitive 5K event. This event usually takes place sometime in the spring and gives each girl a chance to shine.
