Another step forward as local businesses and volunteers battle to fight hunger in our area.
Food City, Bristol Motor Speedway, and Smithfield Foods donated 40,000 pounds of hot dogs this morning to area food banks.
The Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee will split the donation with Feeding America Southwest Virginia.
Kathy Smith with Second Harvest tells News 5 that during the summer, parents turn to food pantries to help replace those meals their kids normally get at school. She says, "It's a great donation. We are just glad to be a part of it. It will really go a long way toward helping feed families this summer.”
This significant donation in Bristol is part of Smithfield’s Helping Hungry Homes tour.
We've learned through this program, Smithfield has donated and delivered more than 25.4 million servings of protein to food-assistance organizations across the country.
