Life savings recovered from junked fridge
Woman's sister accidentally tossed refrigerator with $5,000 inside
A Queens woman has recovered her $5,000 life savings from a refrigerator her sister considered trash.
Magda Castillo told New York TV station WABC she had forgotten all about her secret hiding place until after her sister junked the fridge for $5 last week.
They went to the junkyard the next day, but it was too late.
The fridge had been smashed "like a pancake," Castillo told WABC.
The pair left, convinced they would never see the money again, but workers later used a forklift to pry open the crushed appliance and found the bills in envelopes and wrapped in plastic bags.
They alerted the media, and Castillo came back after watching the story.
"I saw on the TV they found my money," the Cuban-born Castillo told the New York Daily News. "I said, 'Oh my God, I'm very happy.'"
She and her savings were reunited on Tuesday.
And it's no more kitchen storage for her. Castillo said she now plans to put the money in the bank.
