Lawmakers pass new abortion rules in Tarheel State
A bill to allow new abortion rules is headed to the desk of North Carolina's governor.
North Carolina lawmakers approved the new rules Thursday, which supporters say will make abortions safer.
However, critics say they restrict the ability of women to have abortions by forcing clinics to close.
The bill allows the state to develop rules to regulate such clinics, based on the same standards as those for outpatient surgery centers.
Groups supporting abortion rights are trying to pressure Republican Governor Pat McCrory to veto the measure, citing his campaign vow not to sign any new abortion restrictions into law.
