UPDATE: Interstate 77 southbound update:  I-77 southbound between the West Virginia line and the Big Walker Mountain Tunnel has been cleared and traffic has been released at the East River Mt. Tunnel and is now flowing south out of West Virginia. The queue in WV will take time to clear but is in motion.


Friday, January 18, 2013 – 4 a.m.

BRISTOL— The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) reports crews have been working throughout the night to clear snow throughout southwestern Virginia.

Interstate 77 in Bland County remains blocked in some areas due to clearing multiple incidents, some involving the removal of tractor-trailers blocking both lanes of the interstate.     

With temperatures below freezing overnight and into the morning, motorists can expect some refreezing to occur and extremely slick travel conditions in many areas. 

Be alert to the following conditions:

-  Interstate 77 in Virginia remains snow-covered and hazardous.  A tractor-trailer incident on I-77 southbound at mile-marker 56 continues to have both lanes of I-77 blocked.  An incident at I-77 northbound at mile marker 54 was just cleared as of 4 a.m.  Motorists are advised to postpone travel in this area until conditions improve.  VDOT and emergency service personnel are making every effort to respond.

 -  Interstate 81 in Wythe County remains snow-covered and hazardous.  Motorists are advised to postpone travel in this area until condition improve.

 -  Interstate 81 in Smyth and Wythe counties has scattered snow and ice patches.  

 -  The majority of roads in Bland, Smyth, Grayson and Wythe counties remain snow-covered and hazardous.  

 -  Primary routes in Russell, Washington, Tazewell, Buchanan, Dickenson, Scott and Lee counties have scattered snow and ice patches, while many secondary routes in those areas remain snow-covered and slick.

 -  Main roads in Wise County remain snow-covered and slick.  Secondary routes in Wise County are hazardous and unnecessary travel is not recommended.

 Crews first begin clearing interstates, primary roads and major secondary roads that connect localities, fire stations, employment hubs, military posts, schools, hospitals and other important public facilities. Secondary roads and subdivision streets will be treated if multiday storms hit the commonwealth, but crews will focus efforts on those roads that carry the most traffic.
