Knoxville plans to extend employee benefits to domestic partners, becoming the largest city in Tennessee to make such a move.
Mayor Madeline Rogero told the Knoxville News Sentinel granting the benefits is about "treating employees equally and fairly - those who are in committed relationships."
The benefit would require a domestic partner regardless of sexual orientation or preference to prove via financial documents and a signed affidavit their commitment to an employee.
The move makes Knoxville the first large city in Tennessee to extend city medical, dental, vision, and dependent life benefits to same-sex and opposite-sex domestic partners. Collegedale also extended the benefits.
Domestic partner insurance coverage will be available in the city's open enrollment staring this month. City staff estimates that 2 percent of city employees will apply.
