Kingsport church slowly recovers from flood
It's been a pretty Sunday across the region, but some places in Kingsport are still dealing with flooding damage from two weeks ago.
One church that has thousands of dollars in damage is reaching out to help other businesses in downtown Kingsport recover.
Harvest Community Church members have held their services outside since the church building was flooded two weeks ago. "The members are really resilient, they get in there and help, and they've got a big faith," says Pastor Bud Beverly.
Beverly tells us the church is still waiting on insurance to give them the go ahead before repairs begin. "Sheetrock will be done, then we need to paint, put carpet down, get furniture. All of those kinds of things," adds Beverly.
Beverly says once the insurance comes in it will only cover a small portion of it. The cost for total repairs comes to around $35,000.
However, they're getting help from the community. "People have been giving donations. We've had donations come from outside our church family, and people in our church family are reaching a little deeper to help in those efforts," says Beverly.
Even though Harvest Community Church is dealing with their own damage like repairing the walls and replacing the carpet, they're still reaching out to help the community. "It's the Golden Rule, treating others the way you want to be treated. We are in that situation. We've had lots of help here, we just want to give back to the community," adds church member Amy Patterson.
Patterson tells us she knows everything will work out with the church that's why they are trying to help others. "We want to serve our community, get to know the people in our community, and help out where we can," says Patterson.
Meanwhile Beverly tells us they just opened the church doors last month.
Beverly also told us they hope to have some of next Sunday's service inside the church, but the complete clean-up will take at least two more weeks.
