KINGSPORT, TENN. -

J. Fred Johnson Stadium in Kingsport will have a new look thanks to an extensive renovation that's underway.

An official groundbreaking was held on site to kick off the construction project that will add an upper deck of seating, a new press box, and the necessary improvements for access for the disabled.

School Superintendent Lyle Ailshie says the $4.5 million dollar project is well worth it. "It's just really needed for a variety of safety issues, new restrooms, concessions, and then additional seating," he told us.

While some seats will have to be removed for accessibility, the new upper deck will have close to 1,500 seats.

The renovation is expected to be done by October of next year.
