A long stretch of Interstate 81 now displays the name of a long-time Southwest Virginia Congressman.

The Virginia Department of Transportation officially named the 118-mile stretch of highway from Bristol to Christiansburg in honor of former United States Congressman William Wampler, Sr.

Congressman Wampler served eight terms in office from 1967 until 1983.

His children said it is a honor to have the road he traveled for so many years back and forth to Washington named for their dad. "Dad was first elected in 1952, under General Eisenhower. President Eisenhower was known as the father of the interstate system and to have Interstate 81, at least in this postage stamp of the world, named in his honor is something he would be very proud of,” said his son, William Wampler, Jr.

Signs naming the interstate in honor of the Congressman will be placed in 14 locations along the road.

Congressman William Wampler, Sr. senior passed away on May 23, 2012 after a lengthy illness.
