RICHMOND, VA -

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe has signed a new bill that repeals the annual tax the state holds on hybrid vehicles.

He signed the repeal of the tax during a radio appearance on the February 26. The tax repeal is effective as of July 1, 2014.

It will affect almost 75,000 hybrid cars in the state of Virginia.

The $64 tax was part of a transportation funding bill passed in 2013. Critics of the bill said in unfairly punished drivers that were trying to save on fuel use.
