BRISTOL, Tenn. -

The Healing Hands Health Center gives a helping hand with healthcare at no cost to the working uninsured. For their efforts, they are the community impact hero award winner in the American Red Cross/WCYB Celebration of Heroes.

"This award really belongs not to us but to a very large number of people," Medical Director Dr. Dave Arnold said. "There's so many people without whose help we cannot do what we're doing."

Since opening 16 years ago, Healing Hands has seen over 55,000 patients. "We provide medical care, dental care, chiropractic care, eye appointments, counseling appointments," Arnold said.

To patients like Debbie Funk. "The compassion that they put into it is amazing," Funk said.

Debbie's been coming to Healing Hands four years now. She wonders what she'd do without them. "Probably drop like a rock," Funk said. "Because you know I work hard but I don't have any insurance and such and they've just been a blessing to me and been here for me and I don't know what I'd do without them."

Tuned into the heartbeat of a community in need. Healing Hands are heroic hands. "A good friend of mine a doctor was killed in Afghanistan a couple of weeks ago, Jerry Omanos," Arnold said. "His wife said after he was killed that he desired to be the hands and feet of Christ. I think that that would be a very good description of what we aspire to do. We are providing a very worthwhile service here and in some sense I guess you could call that heroic but there are many in the world who have paid a far greater price than we have to serve the under served and they are truly heroes."
