The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia is planning to retire this year.

The court announced Cynthia Kinser's intentions Friday. No resignation date was given.

Kinser was appointed by former Gov. George Allen in 1997 and elected twice as a justice by the General Assembly.

She was elected as the court's 25th chief justice by her fellow justices to a four-year term that began Feb. 1, 2011.

Officials say the Lee County native was the first woman selected as chief justice. Kinser received undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee and her law degree from the University of Virginia.

She also has served as a local prosecutor and as a U.S. magistrate judge.
