Nashville, Tenn. -

Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam signed a bill reducing the Hall Income tax for senior citizens.

In a press release, the governor's office says the bill raises the exemption level of the tax to single filers 65 years old with an income of less than $33,000. Joint filers with at least one spouse at least 65 years old are exempt with an income of less than $59,000.

The previous exemptions were $26,200 for single filers at least 65 years old... and $37,000 for joint filers at least 65 years old.

The new legislation is effective January 1, 2013 for tax purposes.
