JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -

It's World Breastfeeding Month and there was a special event in Johnson City today to celebrate.

The Washington County, Tennessee Health Department hosted the festivities, which included door prizes, vendors and activities.

There were also educational booths to help new moms.

We talked to one of the leaders of a breastfeeding support group called Mom & Baby Connection and she said she hopes this event raises awareness about the importance of breastfeeding.

"Breastfeeding, it just builds that bond between a mother and child," said Elyse Batista with Mom & Baby Connection. "And, of course, the most important thing is the nutrition. Your body is providing complete nutrition for the baby. It's better than any formula or any solid food you can give the baby."

Batista added that the bonus of breastfeeding is that it helps with weight loss after baby.

The group Mom & Baby Connection meets once a month at the Washington County, Tennessee Department of Health to discuss all kinds of different breastfeeding issues and to provide support for one another.
