If you pick up some groceries this weekend, a local grocery store hopes you'll help fight hunger in Northeast Tennessee at the same time.
The Food Lion in Johnson City is hosting a "Fill Up The Truck" food drive this weekend for Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee.
Customers can buy non-perishable items and place them in a bin when they're done shopping.
Officials say this food drive comes at a good time because the need grows during the summer. "Customers are coming by and donating. We're having a lot of fun with it and hopefully we're going to fill up this truck right here," said Food Lion Store Manager Dick Hawes.
"We know that our pantries and soup kitchens that depend on Second Harvest, over 200 of them, have seen an increase in demand of services. So we really depend on our community to help stock the food banks so we'll have the food they need," said Rhonda Chafin, Executive Director of Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee.
Food Lion customers can sign up their MVP cards online to help the food bank even more with donations. We learned by linking your card, a donation to the Food Bank will be made for each Food Lion Private Brand product you purchase. A donation will double when you use your MVP card on the 10th of each month.
