Hungry to help with bountiful boxes full -- it's Good Samaritan Ministries Summer food distribution program.
"We've been doing this for 20 years now," Executive Director Sarah Wells said. "So it's exciting to be able to see how it's grown."
It's grown so much that now Good Samaritan gives out food to 600 families in six counties all summer long. "Families with children in our school system, if they receive the reduced or free breakfast or lunch, they automatically are qualified. They just have to bring us proof of their income," Wells said. "We forget that the breakfast and lunch program is so valuable, it truly is. We've got to watch that it stays in our school system, but during the summertime they don't have that."
Amanda Johnson is happy for the help. Her husband died two years ago, so she's signing up for the food program. "It's really hard when you struggle in the summer to feed your kids," she said. "I have four boys. Three of my boys are very big and they eat like grown men."
Each family receives 100 pounds of food per month, free of charge. Food is provided by the community with their sponsorships and donations.
It's people helping people; people like Amanda Johnson. "The community is really lucky that we have places like Good Samaritan," Johnson said. "That way our children don't go without."
Good Samaritan Ministries will have two more food distributions this summer on June 26 and July 21, followed by its annual back-to-school picnic July 27.
