Kingsport, Tenn -

A garage sale was held this weekend to raise money for Carter Gillenwater, a 4- year old who is severely autistic and is in need of a service dog.

Hi mother  says he was diagnosed with severe autism at 3 years old, and then with epilepsy in January of this year.

Today, the family held a garage sale at the Bloomingdale Ruritan Club in Kingsport, Tennessee.

The Ruritan Club generously donated the building for two days in order for the family to have the garage sale.

Michelle Gillenwater, Carter's grandmother, attended the garage sale, and says she is pleased with the way the community has responded to help her grandson.

"Just with these garage sales we've raised 600 dollars," said Gillenwater. "We also had someone who just came in and donated 300 dollars."

So far the family has raised $8,000 dollars. But service dogs are expensive. They need nearly 25,000 dollars in order to adopt a service dog.

Gillenwater says they hope to raise enough money and receive Carter's service dog just in time for Christmas.
