Family of toddler killed in fire speaks
Family members of the mother and young son found inside a burning Kingsport home Tuesday are talking about their experience.
They tell us Nikki Dunbar tried to save her little boy, three-year-old Henley, from the fire, but he passed away later.
Tuesday morning, just after 10 am, Kingsport firefighters rushed to the Dunbar's home on Rosetree Lane. The two were found only a few feet from the back door and firefighters believe they were trying to escape the blaze.
"They found her laying at the back door on top of him, trying to cover him, but I guess she passed out because of all the smoke," says Chris Dunbar, who is Henley's uncle.
The toddler was pronounced dead. "Henley, he was just a big-hearted little boy. He loved everybody and she was a stay-at-home mom, just normal everyday life," says Dunbar.
Nikki was was rushed to Holston Valley Medical Center. Per hospital officials, she's still listed in critical condition.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
