According to the American Red Cross of the Mountain Empire, which covers southwest Virginia, there have been three house fires in Virginia and two fires in Tennessee since April 12th, displacing a total of 17 people.
The American Red Cross of Northeast Tennessee tells us while this string of fires is unexpected, they are prepared to take care of the needs of the families.
"I know in the last two weeks we've had five incidents that have occurred and for this time of year that's a little high, more than we would expect," said Red Cross of Northeast Tennessee Executive Director Glenda Bobalik. "We just hope that everybody would just take some time even though we've got this beautiful weather and we all want to be outside. It's so exciting to be planting flowers and walking around the lake and different that we enjoy doing this time of year, that we still remember to be safe."
We've learned it costs the Red Cross an average of $500 to help get those families readjusted after their home catches fire.
