Wednesday is National Peace Officers Memorial Day, a day that falls within National Police Week.
President John F. Kennedy made the proclamation in 1962. Since then, many remember those who've died in the line of duty.
Bristol, Virginia and many other offices held a memorial service to commemorate the event.
This year marks the first time the Hawkins County Sheriff's Department is honoring fallen officers. Three of their officers have died on the line of duty, the most recent being the late Deputy Sheriff Gerald Gibson, who was killed in 2000.
