A Rogersville jury heard opening statements today in the first degree murder trial of Ethan Self.
Self is accused of shooting his father in the back of the head in March 2010 in Greeneville.
His father, Greeneville police officer Roger Self, didn't show up for work. His supervisor came to his house to check on him and found Self's body in his bed.
Prosecutors say Ethan used his father's service pistol to shoot his dad.
Assistant DA Dennis Brooks read part of Ethan's confession to the jury. "I panicked because I didn't mean for this to happen," Brooks read from the statement. "I almost got sick. I was trying to think what to do and I decided to make it look like a break-in."
Defense attorney John Rogers says Roger Self was an abusive father and husband, stating that at times his mother would shield Ethan from his father's anger. "His mother would always say to him, 'Be careful, Ethan, don't make your father mad. Whatever you do don't make him mad.'"
By noon, prosecutors had finished with their first witness.
The trial is expected to last through next week.
