WEYERS CAVE, Va. -

A Virginia inmate who escaped while on work release is back in custody.

The Virginia Department of Corrections says the U.S. Marshals Service captured 44-year-old Karan Batra in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday evening. The department and Virginia State Police didn't provide details.

Batra was captured about nine hours after he left a work release crew Wednesday morning. The crew was landscaping the grounds at Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport in Weyers Cave.

Batra was assigned to Cold Springs Work Center.
