ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. -

The Elizabethton Police Department wants residents to be aware of a recent scam in the area.

It's been reported that people have been contacted by an out of area phone number claiming to be calling from computer companies.

The scam is offering Elizabethton residents online assistance in upgrading their computers, virus protection, etc. Once a person agrees to do so, the caller then has access and control of the computer and begins to alter settings and security functions on the computer.

The call is also requesting for a form of payment for the computer service.

Residents are also reporting damage to their computers after this happens.

Elizabethon Police department wants the public to be cautious if you are contacted because some of the reports they have received indicate that the caller's actions are questionable.
