East Tennessee officials consider new jail
Officials in Loudon County are considering a new jail after studying the problem of overcrowding at its current facility.
The Knoxville News Sentinel reports the Corrections Partnership committee, which is made up of jail officials, county commissioners, court officers and others, are moving closer to making a decision on how to proceed after studying the issue for nearly two years.
The population of the jail has run at about 50 inmates above the certified limit of 95 inmates for much of the past year and inmates recently were sleeping on mats on the floor.
An architectural study has recommended building a new structure with 280 beds on land where the facility could be expanded to eventually hold 400 beds.
Officials say they are exploring all options.
