A year-long investigation by the Russell County Sheriff's Office has ended with drug indictments against 18 people.
Deputies spent Thursday night and Friday morning arresting 12 people on charges of distributing narcotics.
A Russell County grand jury handed down 40 indictments on people living throughout Southwest Virginia. Most of the indictments stem from undercover buys according to Sheriff Steve Dye.
"These indictments are for distribution of narcotics," Dye said. "Marijuana, synthetic drugs, but as it seems to always be the case in Russell County, prescription drugs were the bulk of these charges."
Sheriff Dye says that in his 27-year career, 80 percent of most arrests have involved prescription drugs.
