Dragon boat races raise money for cancer care
Drum sounds and dragon boats filled Boone Lake Saturday afternoon for the 8th annual Dragon Boat Races.
We’re told 42 teams and 884 participants paddled their way to raising money for the Radiation Oncology Department at The Johnson City Medical Center.
Event organizers say more than $100,000 was raised.
The money will be used to buy new equipment to help patients.
"We're hoping to use this to purchase new radiation equipment. The fundamental tool we use in radiation treatment is called a linear accelerator. It allows us to see and treat tumors we couldn't see in the past," says Radiation Oncologist Dr. Kyle Colvett.
Dr. Colvett tells us this piece of equipment will allow doctors to be more precise and allow patients to be treated quicker and recover faster.
