WASHINGTON COUNTY, Va. -

(Released for publication) At 6:00 am this date, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force of the United States Marshals Service, and with the assistance of numerous Sheriff’s Offices and Police Departments, began conducting OPERATION FIRECRACKER. Operation Firecracker is a warrant initiative created by Washington County Sheriff’s personnel in an attempt to apprehend a large number of wanted persons for whom arrest warrants have been issued and are outstanding from Washington County, Virginia.

This Operation is being conducted to take those persons off our streets who are harming our citizens, some of whom are wanted for violent crimes, and to make our communities safer. Persons sought in this initiative are charged with offenses ranging from, armed robbery, malicious wounding, forcible rape, larceny, breaking and entering, probation violations, felony DUI and many other offenses. By targeting these offenders for arrest, the Sheriff’s Office is better able to protect our citizens and communities from crime and harm.

As a result of this initiative, 32 fugitives have been arrested or located in this county and other jurisdictions, with detainers being placed on those individuals who are currently incarcerated in other states. There have been 65 warrants for arrest cleared. Out of that number, 15 were found to be detained in other states that the Washington County Sheriff’s Office had not been notified about. Seventeen have been physically arrested in Washington County today. There are 13 fugitives in four states that are being sought by Task Force personnel. In addition, there are 22 warrants that 4 Task Force teams in TN are currently attempting to serve. There are currently three active teams in VA that are attempting to apprehend fugitives.
