CLINTWOOD, Va. -

Senior prom -- it can be the highlight of a high schooler's life. But, it can also be the low point if they make a foolish decision behind the wheel.

So again this year, the Dickenson County Sheriff's Department held a pre-prom awareness week leading up to Saturday night's event.

The sheriff's office, Clintwood police, fire and rescue, and Wings of Life have participated in seminars all week to educate high school students on the dangers of impaired or distracted driving.

Sheriff Bobby Hammons tells us the goal is to make them aware how life-changing and serious these things are. "The seriousness of drunk driving, alcohol, drugs and the texting," Hammons said. "We just want them to be safe and have a safe prom."

The sheriff's department will also sponsor a chaperoned after prom party from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. at the Clinchco ballpark offering a fun and safe environment for Clintwood and Haysi students.
