DA reviewing file on June 2013 officer-involved shooting
We have new information about the Kingsport officer-involved shooting from June 2013.
The TBI tells us the District Attorney is reviewing the file and is planning to present the findings to the grand jury.
Kingsport Police say 25-year-old Jeffrey Caldwell created a threatening situation on the roof of a Watauga Street home when they came to serve a warrant. Click here to read more.
During a standoff that lasted hours, police say Caldwell had a weapon and made repeated detailed threats to harm both the officers on the scene and himself. Police say Caldwell's behavior escalated and they say he took very specific actions that led offers to believe they were at risk of serious harm or death. At that point, an officer shot Caldwell.
He was treated at the hospital, and later booked into the Sullivan County Jail, where he remains with no bond.
The TBI is still investigating, and the officer involved is back at work. "[Returning] is completely based on the circumstances and how the officer is dealing with the particular situation. Obviously some cases are different than others, but it's completely an administrative leave," says Tom Patton with the Kingsport Police Department.
Interim Police Chief David Quillin said his officers were justified in their response to the incident.
The TBI tells us there's no timetable on when the findings will go to the grand jury.
