BRISTOL, Va. -

Many people have started decorating for Christmas both inside and out, but the Bristol, Virginia Fire Department wants to remind you of a few safety tips.

Bristol, Virginia Fire Chief J.C. Bolling says to never hang your stockings over the fireplace if you plan to have a fire.

When it comes to the Christmas tree, Bolling says to keep it down to three light strands per tree and to use LED lights -- they put off less heat.

Bolling also says to keep everything away from heat sources. "Any heat source, you need 36 inches [of clearance] at a minimum. Have your flammables like wrapping paper, your cloth stockings, at least 36 inches away from a heat source," he said.

Bolling also says to never leave Christmas lights unattended and to never throw wrapping paper, bows, or bags into the fireplace.
