Changes could be on the way for Standards of Learning Tests in Virginia. A proposed bill in the House of Delegates could reduce the number of SOL's in 3rd through 8th grade from 22 to 17.
It will improve the tests to encourage problem solving, critical thinking and knowledge application skills.
Bristol, Virginia Superintendent Mark Lineburg tells us he supports the bill because it puts the focus back on student learning and less on testing. "We also want accountability. We think that student learning is the most important thing that goes on in the schools, and it's not just about assessment; we've been over-assessed and it's time to pivot and get back to what's really important, and that's student learning and investing in teacher quality."
A final vote for this bill is expected in the House of Delegates sometime this week.
