CARTER COUNTY, Tenn. -

A Carter County deputy is on administrative leave without pay after he was charged with assaulting an ex-girlfriend and her neighbor.

According to his arrest report, Matthew Ainsworth confronted his ex-girlfriend about cheating allegations before hitting her in the head and face.

"He was alleged to have assaulted her, very aggressively. She ran to an adjoining apartment," says Chris Mathes, the Carter County Sheriff.

Sheriff Mathes says she ran to a neighbor's apartment at the complex off the Old Milligan Highway for help.

"She came to the door. I opened it up. She stepped inside and said, "He's trying to kill me,'" says neighbor Dennis Bennett.

Bennett says he tried to get a tag number to call 911, but was attacked in the parking lot. "I just couldn't understand why somebody would hit me from behind," says Bennett.

The Carter County Sheriff's Office arrested Ainsworth on charges of assault and assault under domestic violence. Click here to read more.

"It's extremely disappointing. My department is hurt by this, but we're going to do the right thing. We have an obligation to investigate it and we have," says Sheriff Mathes.

The sheriff says Ainsworth was not on duty when this happened.

We spoke with Ainsworth over the phone. He said he has no comment and that we needed to speak to his attorney before hanging up on us.
