CARTER COUNTY, Tenn. -

UPDATE 11:03pm:

Carter County Sheriff Chris Mathes tells us 21-year-old Cody Roberts of Elizabethton died on Watauga Lake.

Carter County EMS found Roberts’ body Sunday afternoon near the town of Butler.

The search began around 6 o’clock Sunday morning after family and friends woke up and couldn’t find him. Mathes tells us the family believed he drowned after they found some of his personal belongings near the dock. Mathes told us, “there was some items found there and it was sunglasses that were believed to be there. Just minor things that someone would be carrying to have around…”

Sheriff Mathes also told us with the water temperature as low as it is, if someone unexpectedly fell in, there’s a chance muscles could easily freeze up.

The Sullivan County Dive Team retrieved the body around 6:30 Sunday evening.

We’re told the sheriff’s office plans on doing an autopsy within the next few days.
