The dream of legally shooting BB guns alone for thousands of kids in North Carolina could become a reality with a bill moving through Legislature.

The Fayetteville Observer reports Rep. David Lewis of Hartnett County recently learned his county is one of 17 where BB guns  are considered "dangerous firearms" that kids 12 and under cannot used unsupervised.

The law was approved in the 1960s, but Lewis doesn't know why.

His bill to remove five counties from the list has passed the House and is now before the Senate.

Rep. John Szoka of Cumberland County wants his county off the list too. But the bill was local legislation that can apply only for five counties. There were already five listed so Azoka plans a similar bill next year.
