Attorney: First lady bought Star Scientific stock
Gov. Bob McDonnell's private legal team says first lady Maureen McDonnell purchased stock in troubled nutritional supplements maker Star Scientific without the governor's knowledge.
Bill Burck, a Washington lawyer representing Maureen McDonnell in a federal probe of ties the governor and first lady had to the company and chief executive Jonnie Williams, said she bought company stock twice without telling her husband.
Burck said she bought 6,000 shares worth about $30,000 in the summer of 2011 for herself and her children, then sold it in December 2011 for about $15,000. Williams was a McDonnell campaign contributor.
People familiar with the investigation say she repurchased the shares in January 2012 and transferred them to her children last December. They spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is still ongoing.
