John S. Battle High School was host to the Special Olympics Saturday.
More than 100 athletes from all across southwest Virginia were competing in the Area 10 regional games.
Washington, Wise, Lee, Smyth, and Tazewell Counties were represented, along with the City of Bristol.
Chairperson Darlene Dean tells us the athletes have been preparing for over eight weeks to participate in events like the softball throw, long jump, and 50-meter dash.
Some of the participants say it isn't easy, but it's just not about the ribbons
"It's hard and you gotta get ready," Megan Poe said.
"You've gotta have good sportsmanship," Brittany Shores added.
Some people were just there on Saturday to cheer on participants.
“I'm just here cheering on my girlfriend, I want her to win," Jamie Hartshock said.
More than 50 of today's participants will move on to the state competition.
They'll be competing in Richmond in early June.
Some members of the News 5 team were at the games cheering on participants and handing out ribbons.
