An artist known for weaving tree saplings and branches into towering sculptures is bringing his craft to the University of Virginia.
The university said Monday that Patrick Dougherty is using locally gathered saplings to create a sculpture for display in front of the Ruth Caplin Theatre on the Betsy and John Casteen Arts Grounds.
Over the past 30 years, Dougherty has produced more than 200 such projects worldwide.
The sculpture is being built with help from university and community volunteers. It's called "Stickwork," and will be on display for more than a year.
Work began Sept. 30 and is expected to conclude Oct. 18.
