AEP to change coal plant to gas
Appalachian Power is requesting approval to convert a coal fired power plant in Russell County, Virginia to operate with natural gas.
If approved, the project is expected to generate the equivalent of 267 short-term job and 117 long-term jobs at the Clinch River Plant.
The project is expected to generate nearly $1 million in taxes for Russell County every year.
Appalachian Power officials say changing two of the three generating units from coal to natural gas is the cheapest way to meet customers' need.
If the proposal is accepted, the transition will cost the company about $65 million.
